New LBCC board member aims to bring more students, success to his alma mater

Uduak-Joe Ntuk is on a mission to connect all of Long Beach to its community college.

The newly sworn-in Long Beach City College District 1 trustee represents Bixby Knolls and North Long Beach, which Ntuk says is disconnected from the campus because of some residents’ lack of transportation. He hopes to change that by implementing a free bus pass program for students.

He is also the first African American male to be on the board since the college’s founding nearly 100 years ago. Ntuk says that representation is vital because the college hosts the most African Americans in the city’s higher education systems.

Ntuk was an LBCC student from 1997 to 1999 and played on the Vikings football team. Now, he’s the director of Petroleum Administration for the city of Los Angeles and sets energy and environmental policy, in addition to being a chemical engineering professor at Cal State Long Beach.
